HOW POSTED WAIT TIMES COMPARE TO REALITY

When you arrive at a theme park ride and see a sign that says "90 minutes," you expect to wait about 90 minutes. But crowdsourced data from thousands of guest reports shows that posted wait times at major U.S. theme parks often run significantly higher than the actual experience — sometimes by 30% to 80%.

The posted-to-actual ratio is a simple calculation: Posted Wait ÷ Actual Wait. If the sign says 90 minutes and you wait 60, the ratio is 1.5× — the posted time was 50% higher than reality. Our Park Accuracy Index ranks 20+ major parks by this metric, updated continuously.

Why are posted times often higher than actual waits?

There are several documented reasons. Many parks rely on manual operator estimates rather than automated tracking. Disney Cast Members have explained that overestimating creates a "pleasant surprise" — guests who wait less than expected report higher satisfaction. Parks also overstate times near closing to manage end-of-night queue entry. These factors may correlate with the availability of paid skip-the-line products like Disney's Lightning Lane ($15–$35 per ride) and Universal's Express Pass ($80–$300+ per day), though the relationship is debated. Disney's own app includes a disclaimer noting that wait time estimates may not be fully accurate.

Which parks have the biggest gaps?

Universal's Epic Universe currently leads our index with an average ratio of 1.79× — meaning posted times are nearly double actual waits. Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida follow close behind. Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios show moderate gaps in the 1.4×–1.5× range. Parks like Cedar Point, Dollywood, and Hersheypark consistently post accurate times near 1.0×.
